Accounting Systems and ERP Advisory

ERP advisory covers selecting, implementing and assuring the systems a finance function runs on. The most common cause of a failed implementation is not the software: it is a chart of accounts and process design settled after the system was chosen rather than before, leaving the business to fit itself to defaults it never agreed to.

Independent selection

We are not a reseller and receive no commission from any vendor, so the recommendation reflects your requirement rather than a partnership agreement.

Selection starts from a documented requirement, with vendors scored against it consistently.

Chart of accounts and reporting design

The chart of accounts determines what you will be able to report for years afterwards. Designing it around the decisions you need to make, and around your tax and IFRS reporting obligations, is far cheaper before go-live than after.

Implementation oversight and assurance

Oversight of the implementation partner, data migration validation, user acceptance testing, and post go-live review that the controls designed into the system are actually switched on.

How the engagement runs

  1. Require

Document what the system must do, in business terms, before looking at products.

  2. Select

Score vendors against the requirement, independently and consistently.

  3. Design

Chart of accounts, approval workflows and reporting structure.

  4. Assure

Migration validation, testing and post go-live control review.

Frequently asked questions

How do we choose an ERP system?
Start from a documented requirement expressed in business terms, then score candidate systems against it consistently. Selecting on demonstration quality or price alone is the most common route to an implementation that has to be redone.
Why do ERP implementations fail?
Most often because the process and chart of accounts design was left until after selection, data migration was underestimated, or users were trained on the software rather than on the redesigned process. The software itself is rarely the cause.
Do you sell accounting software?
No. We take no vendor commission and hold no reseller agreements, so our recommendation reflects your requirement rather than a commercial relationship with a supplier.
What is a chart of accounts and why does it matter?
It is the structure of ledger codes that determines how transactions are classified, and therefore what you can report. A poorly designed chart limits reporting for years and is disruptive to change once transaction history has accumulated.
